What is the opposite of escalator?

The topic of conversation we had today at the mall:

Escalators should only go up. You can't escalate going down...

Originally we thought cascade referred to going down, so we called a going down escalator a "cascadalator." After googling, though, cascade is not correct terminology.

We can call the going down escalator a "descalator." DESCending escALATOR. I'm not a fan of that though. The opposite of descend is ascend. It's not called an ascendalator.

I still don't know of a better name. Thoughts?

  2. There is no opposite of escalator. Escalators go both up and down.

  3. No no. Escalate and ascend are synonyms. So saying descalator is actually as correct as you can be. There is no real "opposite" for escalate as there is for ascend.

We call this the fallacies of the English language, which I am certain there exists at least five published books on...

  4. I am sitting here in Hungary writing a short story for a French lady friend (who is also my boss). The story is a way of saying thanks. And... well I needed the "opposite of escalator". So you enter the adventure and lottery of google...and the first item of any interest is this blog entry.

Strange world. You can suddenly be transported from being deep in writing a story of two people travelling in opposite directions on an escalator, into the world of someone called "Meg". Whose blog posts are infrequent and yet are interesting in their own right.

So I raise a toast to "Meg", a stranger on life's escalator, who may be going up or down. Or be in a heap on the step as it suddenly stopped because some ***hole hit the STOP button.

To the wonders of the Internet...
    To brief encounters...

  5. Deescalate IS the opposite just as descend is for ascend. So DEESCALATOR. i dunno why anyone say there is no opposite, we use it every day.
